Heather & I have always 'preached' not to buy something you don't need just because you have a coupon.
As with everything, there are ALWAYS exceptions to this rule. I'm not going to sit here & tell you that I've never bought more than I needed. I mean, do I really need 15 boxes of tampons or 100 tubes of toothpaste? Or even 50 toothbrushes. No, of course not. Do I still buy them? If they're free, or close to it, of course!
Everyone's household needs & budgets are unique.
Here are a few of the rules that I follow:
- Never buy more than my household can use up in a 6-12 month period. If it's free or a money maker deal that you don't think you can pass up, donate everything above that.
- Always remember sales tax (unless you're in a state that doesn't tax coupons ie: Missouri) What's the point in buying 100 tubes of toothpaste for 'free' when you actually end up spending over $30 in sales tax? Those items are no longer free. Of course, $30 for 100 tubes of toothpaste sounds like a good deal, but wouldn't it have been better to get 5 or 10 for a buck or two? 10 tubes of toothpaste would last any family until the next sale comes along. (Possibly even a better sale!)
- Never spend more than you have just because it's an amazing sale. I know, this one sounds like a no-brainer, but honestly, it's easier said than done. I'm not going to lie, I've broken my budget a few times. All to make sure I got in on a sale.
Like I said, ever household is different, so make your own rules. (and of course, you're own exceptions!)
Speaking of which, my stockpile is getting a little low. Time to go shopping! :)
